Blasting through a truck, a new laser weapon battery has been demonstrated by Lockheed Martin, one of the world's leading defense and aerospace company.
Dubbed the Advanced Test High Energy Asset (ATHENA), the new laser weapon system showed off what the defense firm described as the highest power ever documented by a laser weapon of its type. Lockheed Martin said the purpose of the test was aimed to show the company¡¯s innovations in weaponry technology that is more precise.
In the test, the 30-kilowatt fiber-optic laser weapon, fired from over a mile away, disabled the truck¡¯s engine in just a few seconds, without actually destroying the whole vehicle. ATHENA is a groundbasedprototype system.
Based on a technique called ¡°spectra beam combining,¡± multiple fiber laser modules come together to establish a sole, high-quality beam that ¡°provides greater efficiency and lethality than multiple individual 10-kilowatt lasers used in other systems.¡±
¡°Fiber-optics lasers are revolutionizingdirected energy systems,¡± Keoki Jackson, chief technology officer of Lockheed Martin, said in a statement. ¡°We are investing in every component of the system - from the optics and beam control to the laser itself - to drive size, weight, and power efficiencies.¡±
¡°This test represents the next step to providing lightweight and rugged laser weapon systems for military, aircraft helicopters, ships and trucks,¡± Jackson was quoted by U.S. media as telling reporters during the test session. ATHENA is based on Lockheed's area defense anti-munitions (ADAM) laser weapon system. It incorporates the 30-kilowatt accelerated laser demonstration initiative (ALADIN) fiber laser developed by the company in Bothell, Washington.
The laser weapon is manufacturedat Lockheed's facility in Sunnyvale, California. It has already proven itsefficacy in demonstrations against arange of small airborne and sea-basedtargets.
The U.S. military has already been testing a wide range of laser weapons.
In December 2015, the U.S. Navy demonstrated its own 30-kilowatt laser weapon, a less powerful version than Lockheed¡¯s. Dubbed the Laser Weapon System (LaWS), it fired from aboard the USS Ponce (LPD-15) to destroy a moving boat.
