China has unveiled its plans to develop its nextgeneration attack helicopter and a heavy-lift cargo chopper.

China¡¯s official English-language newspaper China Daily has reported that Aviation Industry Corp of China has begun to develop a fourth-generation attack helicopter and expects to deliver it to the People¡¯s Liberation Army around 2020. The state-owned defense contractor disclosed the information in a media brochure distributed to domestic journalists taking part in the 3rd China Helicopter Expo, which opened on Wednesday in Tianjin.

This is the first time that China has officially confirmed it is developing a new-generation combat helicopter.

AVIC¡¯s chairman Lin Zuoming said on the sidelines of the expo that the new aircraft will have stealth capability and will reshape the combat patterns of the PLA ground force which is increasingly depending on helicopters because they have better strike capability and mobility than armored vehicles, and can transport supplies to frontier troops in a timely manne.r Currently, China possesses the second-generation WZ-9 choppers, and third-generation WZ-10s and WZ-19s, in its combat helicopter fleet. Their major tasks are anti-tank warfare and air support missions for infantry troops, as well as air-to-air combat.

Wu Ximing, chief helicopter designer at AVIC, has voiced that the new helicopter will also feature suprem emaneuverability in complicated environments, outstanding survivability and joint operational ability as well.

In addition, AVIC has also disclosed plans to develop a super-size heavy-lift cargo helicopter jointly with Russia from next year.

¡°We are discussing with our Russian counterparts terms and clauses in the agreement. The negotiations should conclude before the end of this year and the development will start next year,¡± said Wu Ximing.

The new helicopter¡¯s production will be based in China, Wu said, adding that the chopper will use the Ukraine-made Lotarev D-136 turboshaft engine at the initial mass-production stage.

Under the joint development program, the Chinese side will be responsible for avionics systems and advanced materials for the new helicopter, while Russia will take responsibility for the aerodynamic design, transmission gear and de-icing equipment. According to AVIC, the aircraft will have a maximum takeoff weight of 38.2 metric tons and a maximum cruising speed of 300 km per hour. It will be capable of flying at altitudes up to 5,700 meters and have a range of 630 km. It will be capable of carrying 10 tons of cargo, or more than 100 people inside the cabin, or 15 tons in an external sling.

The helicopter will use China¡¯s world-class avionics systems and advanced materials, while Russia will be responsible for the aerodynamic design, transmission gear and de-icing equipment ¡°Our existing turboshaft engines¡¯ maximum output power is about 1,000 kilowatts, not powerful enough to propel the heavy-lift helicopter. The Chinese engineers are developing a 5,000-kilowatt turboshaft engine that can be used by the aircraft in the future,¡± Wu told reporters.

China has realized that it needs a heavy-lift helicopter following a devastating earthquake in Sichuan province in 2008 and that a lack of such heavy-lift aircraft made it difficult for relief authorities to transport urgently needed rescuers and materials to mountainous areas affected by the disaster. China then decided to develop a heavy-lift helicopter to serve mainly civilian purposes.

Huang Chuanyue, deputy chief engineer at Avicopter, AVIC¡¯s helicopter branch, said that China is expected to need 200 such type of helicopters within the coming three decades, with the world market¡¯s demand to reach about 2,000 in that mentioned period of time.

Currently, heavy-lift helicopters in use aroundthe world include the United States¡¯ Boeing CH-47Chinook, Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion and Russia¡¯sMil Mi-26 series.

Chinese designers are also working on the development of ultrafast helicopters that can achieve a speed of 700 km per hou,r according to AVIC.
